Consultations

All standard veterinary consultations are 20 minutes.

The most cost effective way for your pet to have routine injections and other minor procedures is with a registered vet nurse consultation, these are 20 minutes. The cost of nail clips or scent gland emptying is included in the standard nurse consult fee.

Many referral vets conveniently see and treat your pets here at York Street. Referral consultations range from 30 to 70 minutes.

Dog Vaccinations

Puppies are typically protected from distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza and four forms of Leptospirosis by being given two injections usually four weeks apart.

To ensure your puppy has the best start in life there is a complimentary third visit free of charge with Dr Natalia Bewick DVM MSc, our behaviour vet.

Adult dogs have an annual health check at which a vaccination may be given. A distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, Parainfluenza (DHPPi) booster is given no more frequently than every three years. A Leptospirosis (L4) vaccination is only effective for around a year so this is usually given yearly.

Kittens living indoors are typically protected from feline enteritis, calicivirus and rhinotracheitis virus by being given two injections usually three weeks apart.

The RCP vaccine is a core feline vaccination that protects cats against three life-threatening viral diseases: Feline Rhinotracheitis (FHV-1), Feline Calicivirus (FCV), and Feline Panleukopenia (FPLV)

Kittens meeting outdoor cats may be exposed to Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV).

To ensure your kitten has the best start in life there is a complimentary third visit free of charge with Dr Natalia Bewick DVM MSc, our behaviour vet.

Adult cats have an annual health check at which a vaccination may be given. Infectious enteritis vaccine gives at least three years protection so is given infrequently. Flu vaccine may be given yearly. If your cat is permanently indoors we will discuss what the best continuing vaccine plan is for your pet.

Cats meeting outdoor cats may be exposed to Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV). When cats are vaccinated against FeLV there is an additional fee.

In House Laboratory Tests

If you invest in private health care you are already familiar with the costs of lab tests. We use identical equipment to do blood and urine tests and video microscopic examinations. The only significant difference is that we must add 20 percent VAT to the charges That’s why veterinary lab tests may be as much as 20 percent costlier than ones your doctor arranges for you.

Many other tests give us same day results. Prices vary according to the tests that are undertaken. We also send samples to specialist labs in Glasgow, Bristol and elsewhere. These prices also vary according to the tests that are undertaken.

Medication & Prescriptions

We are regularly inspected by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, for example to ensure that we keep records of the temperatures in our biological fridges, on the dispensary’s shelves and in our examination rooms. We safely destroy dated drugs or products exposed to out of range temperatures.

To cover these costs we have a mark-up of 35 percent on vaccines, parasite control treatments and food and up to 50 percent on prescription medicines. While it is convenient to collect medicines when you visit they may be cheaper from online pharmacies.

The paperwork for written prescriptions takes much longer to complete than dispensing so there is a charge.
