Choosing Your Release Command

Use A Chosen Word As Your ‘Release’ Command

Your dog needs to learn that a specific word means a training exercise is over. This is particularly important for “wait”, “sit” and “lie down”. We use the word “OK” as a “release command” for our dogs although something that your dog is less likely to routinely hear, like “Let’s go” is better. After your dog has obeyed your command to “Come” give it a “release” command. Use rewards only when it responds to your command. Don’t give rewards, and that includes verbal praise rewards, after you’ve given the release command.
